Brad Leighton returns to ACT victory lane at Thunder Road
Four tires and a win for Brad Leighton on the American-Canadian Tour.
But not four tires in the sense of a traditional pit stop. Instead, Leighton overcame four flat tires to post an improbable win in the Bond Auto Labor Day Classic 200 at Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Sunday.
Cris Michaud and Eric Williams followed Leighton to the checkered flag.
Leighton fought with Patrick Laperle and Eric Williams in a heated battle on the backstretch with 15 laps to go en route to the win. Ben Rowe and Laperle finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
"You talk about overcoming a lot of stuff, these guys on my crew changed everything on this car," said Leighton, who also won the Labor Day 200 at Thunder Road in 2000, when it was a Camping World East Series race. "Four flat tires, sway bars, bent rims, and that was all during the race.
"It’s been five years since I’ve won a race, and I can’t think of a better place to get a win than right here in front of these Thunder Road fans. This place is awesome."
ACT leader Scott Payea suffered the worst luck and hardest hit of the day, wrecking his car with 51 laps to go after a brush with the turn 4 wall.
