It’s like accidentally finding one of your Christmas presents a few days too early. Everybody knows what it is, including the recipient, but nobody will talk about it.
That’s how it is for Joey Logano’s ensuing Sprint Cup Series career.
J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing, wouldn’t confirm any specifics regarding when Logano would make a Sprint Cup debut, but did say that races this year have been on the radar. Separate reports have Logano making his Cup debut at Richmond International Raceway next month and then replacing Tony Stewart in the No. 20 Home Depot car full-time next season.
"We’ve always seen him probably running some Cup races this year, but that’s not related necessarily to running the whole thing next year," Gibbs said on ESPN2's "NASCAR Now" on Wednesday. "What we kind of look at for him is when he’s ready and the time is right, we’ll go."
Logano, who became the youngest winner in Nationwide Series history on June 14, in just his third career start, was taking it all in stride.
"We’ll see," Logano said on the same television show, speaking about an imminent move to Cup. "There’s a good possibility of something like that. Nothing’s been ironed out completely on what we’re going to do, but it’s been talked about a lot. We’ll just have to see."
"There’s no sense pushing guys," Gibbs said. "When all of our guys in-house agree that it’s time to make the move to go to Cup, (Logano) will be sitting there ready to go. Whether that’s next year, 2010, we’re still laying out the groundwork."
