Sounds like Nate Weston’s season in Wiscasset Raceway's Sportsman division has gone about the way his poker fortunes have.
"Well, he wins.... sometimes," offered fellow competitor and poker combatant Mike Landry of Oakland.
Weston, of Madison, picked up his 2nd win of the season on Saturday night at Wiscasset Raceway, first waiting out a nearly 2-hour rain delay and then carefully playing his cards on the track at the start to run away virtually unchallenged in the 25-lap main event.
Asked if he was a better poker player or racer, Weston laughed.
"It’s probably a little bit of both," he said.
Allen Moeller of Dresden had the best shot at Weston, but he was unable to pass the leader on the race’s only restart on lap 20.
"I’ve only had an open track (in front of me) two times, and I’ve won both of those times," Weston said. "It’s just a matter of finding the time to run people down and then having enough to win it."
The real games were being played several positions behind Weston. Jason Gaboury, R.J. Austin and Mike Landry were stacked up like chips on a felt card table. Landry’s car was fast, but it was also stuck in heavy traffic. Not until Austin made contact with Gaboury was the first move made.
By then, though, Weston was long gone.
"Quite honestly, I think it’s the tires," Weston said. "We’ve gone to a harder compound (this year), and it’s made it harder to pass. The preferred lane in our division is the lower lane -- but if a guy gets there, you’ve got to be almost a half-second faster to make the pass on the outside."
Moeller held on for second, while Austin nipped Landry at the line for third.
In other feature racing, Maurice Young of Windsor earned his 7th win of the season in the Strictly Street 20-lap feature, and youngster Ryan Ripley of Waldoboro took his 2nd consecutive Mini Stock feature win.
Les Hinckley passed John McKennedy with under 10 laps remaining to win the Wiscasset Ford 100 for the True Value Modified Series.
