The dueling donuts on the frontstretch provided the fitting ending to Championship Series racing at Oxford Plains Speedway in 2008.
Moments after collecting his division-high 6th win of the season, Ricky Rolfe smoked his tires just a few dozen yards away from Travis Adams, who was celebrating his 4th Late Model championship at Oxford in the last 6 years by doing the same. Together, they brought down the curtain on the Oxford season.
Rolfe in victory lane following a 40-lap event on Saturday night; Adams with a lengthy victory speech following a championship season.
"It’s full circle," Adams said. "It feels like it did when we won in 2003. We just had to go out and run all the races and be consistent. That was the same thing this year."
Rolfe, who beat a surging Don Wentworth and Bill Childs Jr. to the checkered flag, apologized to Adams afterwards for stealing some of his thunder. Adams didn’t mind at all, noting that the victory was for everybody at Race Basics – where Rolfe helps build cars for both himself and Adams, as well as a number of clients here and elsewhere.
"The car still isn’t like it was before (the TD Banknorth 250)," said Rolfe, who won five races in the first half of the season and was a predominant favorite to take the win in that event. "The track’s still not, either. I think the track – the ‘250' always takes a toll on the track, and I think all the rain we’ve had, too, has taken a toll on all the sticky stuff in the outside groove."
Adams won twice this season, but hasn’t won since mid-May. He said that while he feels some "emptiness" in not having produced the kind of dominating season he did in his championship seasons of 2006 and 2007, when he led the division in wins, he was thrilled to have the overall title.
"I am absolutely satisfied," Adams said. "I’m a points racer, flat-out. We don’t come here looking to run just 10th every week – we want to win – but we come here preparing to lead the points every time we lead.
"It’s about the prestige, it’s about the recognition. It’s all part of the history of this speedway."
Adams’ closest competition for the title was Shawn Martin, who entered the feature some 36 points out of the lead and in need of some help to take his first championship since 2004.
Martin pitted twice early and had to settle for an 8th-place finish.
