ON SITE: Kris Huff, late caution flag foil Brad Bellows at Unity Raceway
Most race leaders don’t want to see a late caution flag fly.
Kris Huff wasn't one of those leaders. The Orrington driver may have said all the right things after winning the 25-lap Sportsman race at Unity Raceway on Friday night, and he may have put forth all the bravado he could muster. But the fact was that when the caution came out on lap 21, it did so as Brad Bellows had pulled to the outside groove to make his move on the lead Huff held.
But Huff stayed at the point, everybody’s tires cooled off and Huff went on to his second win of the season.
With a big assist going to the caution flag.
"I thought so," Bellows answered when asked if he had the car to take the lead. "I was right beside him. I was a lot better when the tires were hot. (Huff) seemed to be better once the tires cooled off."
Huff, though, said he was never in danger of being passed. Even if Bellows had pulled alongside him before Bill Smith’s car coasted to a halt in turn 1 to bring out the caution with nine laps remaining.
"We had a restart, didn’t we?" Huff asked. "He didn’t get by me... I was just cruising because I didn’t see anyone behind me.
"I didn’t want to overheat my tires, and I was just saving the car for the end. It paid off."
Kevin Douglass of Sidney finished third after a long day of trying. He didn’t decide to come to the track until just a few hours before the start of the program – after running into George Fernald III, the track operator’s son, at a gas station – and then he spun in his heat race and spent most of the evening scurrying around the pit area trying to repair cosmetic damage.
In the end, Douglass – a Sportsman rookie this season at Wiscasset making his Unity debut in the division – posted the first podium finish in the division. His previous best run was fifth last week at Wiscasset.
